Living in a Multicultural & Multiracial World

Interracial and interfaith partnerships and marriages are increasingly common in our multicultural and multiracial lives and communities. The everyday stresses of relationships, parenting, and managing extended families can be complicated when people are from different racial, religious or cultural backgrounds. It requires nuanced understanding, communication skills, and shared willingness for mutual support. My experience, both professional and personal, frames my ability to help couples and families clarify communication, make complex choices, and encourage empathic understanding of differences.
 

The development of a strong sense of self when an individual has roots in multicultural, interracial or transnational heritages can have its own unique struggles. It is particularly meaningful to me to work with individuals who are of mixed heritage as they learn to honor and develop all aspects of themselves.
 

Because regressive social and institutional beliefs and policies impact our personal lives and freedoms, our work, though grounded in self- and interpersonal-awareness and acceptance, must include developing awareness of the social and political forces and policies that either enhances or negates our intersectional selves. I believe that we are positively affected by strong interpersonal, social and community supports that are foundational to understanding, accepting and nurturing our unique selves and our relationships.​
