What is Therapy

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Therapy can assist a person to expand their abilities to get their personal and relational needs met. But few people have very clear ideas about what therapy is or what to expect.

Experience has taught me that self-exploration and change do not come to those who wait: the journey involves an active search, done with both hope and compassion for oneself, so you can know, experience and  make sense of our experiences: our emotions, our thoughts and our developing stories about ourselves.

As we talk together, with questions, discussion, problem-solving, and skills building, the journey’s path comes into focus. Our work can help you understand how early experiences may have resulted in patterns that either helped you develop strengths, achieve personal and work-related successes, or hindered and blocked you from life satisfactions, joys, successes and meaningful connection with others.

As you give voice to deeply held needs and aspirations within a trusting, safe and contained setting, change can occur.

Therapy is most useful when it is regular and consistent. Typically we meet once a week at a regularly scheduled time for fifty minutes. When leaving a session, there can be times where a person can feel elated, thoughtful and enlightened, connected and hopeful. There are other times after a session when they may feel discouraged, lost or in touch with painful thoughts and feelings.

The journey of therapy involves being willing to safely experience the range of feelings and judgments and vulnerabilities of our lives. In the therapy space, we get to step back, get overviews, become more aware, and more skilled. The process of therapy can be like discovering a personal map as well as the compass for this very personal journey.

“Our mind becomes more spacious, more open and happier as we move past our avoidance and denial, to see what is true.”
